Transcripts show Brown to be Malignant Manipulator

It is clear from reading the testimony of the trial transcripts so far (as opposed to Ted & Patty Kaldis's skewed interpretation) that Brown was a liar, a manipulator, a misanthrope and went to great lengths to punish Sarah Key, Lauren, and anyone else (including his own mother) who thwarted him from getting his way.

Maybe he was a spoiled brat as a child, because he obviously never grew up. His maturity level is at about a 13-yr old level. He has outbursts, he's quick to anger, he's a hot head, he's violent, he's sadistic, he's sarcastic, he's opportunistic, he plays both sides against the middle, he plays mind games, he gaslights, he baits and switches, and he obtained perverse pleasure in hurting Sarah and Lauren Key.

His behavior throughout the year he had supervised and later unsupervised visitation with Lauren was fraught with conflict and cruelty. Until Patty came along, he was living on a boat that was unsafe for small children, yet he continued to take Lauren there even after a court order was issued to prevent it. He enlisted his new wife in the tag-team of mean.

He violated the court orders, complained about the judges, complained about the mediator, complained about Sarah, undermined and criticized his mother, undermined and criticized Sarah, undermined and criticized Greg Marer, undermined and criticized Lauren's step-brother, and frightened Lauren on several occasions between ages 3 and 4.

There is an incident where he threw Lauren into a hot tub knowing she could not swim. There is an incident where he left her suitcase in the middle of the road and told her to come fetch it. There is an incident where he peeled rubber out of the Key-Marer's driveway and Patty lost her balance inside the doorjam and Greg's son was almost slammed by the side door of the VW van. There is an incident where he dropped her off from a visitation and drove off without seeing her to the door. There is an incident where he explodes with rage over Sarah borrowing a quarter from his car during their dating days. There is an incident where he ditches Sarah on a date because she wanted to buy a used baby swing for $13.

He fails to prove a back injury in order to maintain a lower child support order. He lies about the amount of visitation he has in a court document regarding custody issues. He calls CPS on Sarah and accuses her of child abuse because of some shin bruises and a rash on Lauren's face. (All kids get shin bruises.)

He probably lied through his teeth to Patty about his relationship with Sarah and misrepresented the entire scenario to her as if Sarah tried to get pregnant to stay in the USA. He tries to have Sarah deported. He threatens her on several occasions, not least the time when Sarah complained that he was not prepared for shared custody and lacked parenting skills. He did lack parenting skills. I wouldn't trust him with a houseplant. He says to her, "I'll get you for this. What goes around comes around."

Sarah and Lauren developed a relationship with Cam's mother, Lynn, in spite of Cam's objection. He tried to keep everyone apart - his mother, his child, his ex-girlfriend, and his wife. Typical of narcissists who don't want people to compare notes. He knew he would be exposed for the manipulative liar he was.

He complained about his surf board being left out all night the night he was held for questioning. He worried more about his wet shoes, his surfboard and the election results than he did his deceased child. He showed not only inappropriate affect for the situation (and I don't want to hear anything more about that stupid "playbook for grief!"), but inappropriate in any crisis situation, not just one in which your child was killed.

He is a selfish, self-centered, amoral fiend with no conscience. The Portrait of Cameron Brown that his wife and brother-in-law have painted is diametrically opposed to the real Cam Brown - the monster - manipulator - malignant narcissist.

He will be convicted, despite GerEgo's attempt to put Sarah Key-Marer on trial. Sarah will not be vilified, despite the mumbo-jumbo cross examinations that try to elicit detritus signifying nothing. Despite the claims that the Kaldis Klan makes about this poor, dear, loving father being framed.

There was no frame here. This is a well-presented trial that will prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Brown intentionally murdered his daughter. He wanted his freedom. It's an old motive that was ascribed to Scott Peterson and that applies here.

Peterson and Brown are two peas in a pod. They also took a lot of victims. May they both rot.

Does anyone remember what time the 911 call was placed? I'm trying to get the timeline straight in my head.

Ronni said...

Geragos doesn't learn much, does he?

loretta said...

Although Brown didn't say why, he covered his head and face with his shirt as he was driven in a patrol car with Leslie up to Palos Verdes Drive South before being taken to the station.

That is very strange behavior. Can you imagine doing that? Why would you cover your head with a t-shirt like a PERP if your daughter had just fallen in a "tragic accident?"

This guy can't even fake being a bereaved father. He acts like a perp because he IS a perp.

Ronni said...

I can't imagine being anything other than hysterical. I can see a moment's hesitation between going straight to her and getting a phone to call 911. I might go down to toward the nude beach far enough to yell, "Call 911!" and have one of them hear me, but then I'd be off to my child's side.

I can't think of a legitimate excuse for the head covering.

Ronni said...

I wonder if his trying to get Sarah deported will work in his favour, in this climate of censure for illegal immigration.

We see it for what it is; let's hope the jury does.

Anonymous said...

I can't either, Ronni.

Other strange behavior:

Worrying about whether he had blood in his goatee.

Complaining that his boots were wet.

Asking who won the election.

Not once approaching his daughter's body in the 3 hrs. he stood there, 3 ft. away.

Anonymous said...

While I don't know what I would do in that situation, I can imagine. I do know the fear and panic I felt when one of my children was out of sight for even a brief time. I know how I reacted when one of them fell in something more than a tumble with a skinned knee. I know the sense of urgency I felt to immediately run to my child and make sure they were O.K. I can't imagine looking down and seeing my child in a pool of water and not going immediately to them.

I can also agree that everyone acts differently but being in shock doesn't explain his comments and behaviors. He sure had the presence of mind to worry about covering his own derriere.

Ronni said...

I think he called attention to blood in his goatee to back up his assertion that he did CPR on her.

He could have gone close enough to yell to the nudies to call 911, and ask them for help, pointed in the direction of her location, and then gone there. If he had been distraught, they would have gone around and helped. If it were an accident.

But then, as it was not, they would have been witnesses, and he would have had to maintain the act.

Ronni said...

Dane has started a new thread at misc.legal. He links and quotes the article from the first comment on this entry. He also states that the detective who thought Cam's behaviour "odd" is the same one who credited him with showing some emotion, so it would behoove Ted to stay off her back.

loretta said...

After reading the transcripts of the trial I have so far (and not
relying upon the Kaldis interpretation), I have a new theory on the
motive.

Remember when we were puzzled as to why Brown accepted the idea of the adoption so quickly and then changed his mind?

I speculate that the reason he changed his mind is because of Patty.

Patty decided that she wanted to raise Lauren. What better way to usurp the power of the ex-lover (albeit short-lived relationship) than to have custody of the love child? Especially an ex-lover who is hostile to you - and who is much younger, prettier and thinner.

This way, Patty could raise a daughter she could probably not bear at her age (late 40s at the time), without having to go through the high-risk pregnancy and delivery. This was also a way to save a lot of money in child support, since it would be greatly reduced (or eliminated) with the parents shraring equal time with the child.

What better way to have your cake and eat it too?

But Brown didn't want it. Patty was pressuring him to get custody of the child, and they were trying to plant the seads of unfitness with the accusations of abuse and the parental alienation attempts. They attemped to undermine Sarah in every way they could, including
badmouthing her, violating her wishes, showing her and her family
contempt and disrespect, and showering the child with cheap gifts.

But Brown would have none of that in the long run. He figured the only way out of this uncomfortable, stifling, and lifestyle-altering situation was to get rid of the child. That way he had freedom to move, financial freedom, and Sarah and Patty off his back for good.

That's why he didn't want Patty to see him on TV. He hadn't prepared
his story or his game face for her. He had to psych himself up to tell her his "tragic accident" story, and that took some time to prepare.

She apparently bought it, which was a serious mistake. I would feel sorry for her, except that she made her bed and now she can lie in it.

Her financial problems probably began after she lost her job. That put a real crimp in the lifestyle, and that $60K in savings that GerEgo claims they had was not going to last very long with Cam losing 40% of his take-home pay to child support and Patty unemployed. Not in that part of the world, anyway.

I was mistaken when I suggested that Patty was complicit in the murder. She wasn't. She was unaware of Cam's plans. She is another victim. But, she chose to stick by his side, regardless. That is the fate she chose. She can still bail out if she's smart.

Ronni said...

I think she is more obstinate than smart. I think shek'sll stick till the end. If,of course, she is anything like her twin!

Ronni said...

OK. No more bloody mary for me! LOL!

Barbara, the 9-1-1 call was placed at 2:58pm

Anonymous said...

Thanks CG. So he leaves her school sometime after 12:30, gets to the cove parking lot around 1:45, goes to the playground for 20 minutes, starts the hike around 2:05, walks for a milae and a half (part of which is steep and not flat)and less than an hour later is making the call.

It takes me 20 minutes to walk a mile on a flat treadmill at a brisk (3 mph) pace. A mile and a half would take 30 minutes. I don't think a 4 year old could walk a flat surface that fast, much less a steep trail.

As with Peterson, the timeline is going to be an issue and there is no way anyone can be lying about that!

CountryGirl said...

That's why Hum put the parking attendant on the stand to establish the timeline and Lauren's demeaner that day.

Ronni said...

He didn't waste any time, did he? He must have quick-marched her up the trail and chucked her off post-haste. 3 mph is about my normal walking speed. Slower than my daughters, but certainly faster than a little kid!

Anonymous said...

I agree with Loretta's 8:23 post. Patty's an idiot for sticking by Cam. Her soul is as black as his.

Ronni said...

I agree, Dane.

There were several points at which he could have kicked in the rescue gear and got down to business.

And as to the grief discussion: it's not really a question of whether or not his reactions were appropriate or otherwise; they were completely ABSENT!

Anonymous said...

If he hadn't even looked to see what had happened to her, how would he have known that he needed to be grieving? If he had looked, why the heck would he go in the opposite direction from where she was laying? The excuse about people being on the nude beach is ridiculous. The parking lot was on the other side. His guilt is apparent and the state hasn't even called the biomechanics expert yet.

Ronni said...

Well, Barbara, it's like it was with Peterson. You and I and all of us can look at him, and look at what he did, and know he's guilty. Just the same way we knew our children were when they lied to us with wide, innocent-looking eyes.

The fun comes in proving it by the evidence.

I'm sure a lot of cops work that way.

Anonymous said...

Yep, it's kind of like having your child tell you he didn't sneak a cookie and he has two chocolate chip fudge cookies stuffed in his mouth, smiling.

CountryGirl said...

{Loretta had wrote " Actually, the fact that he took the time to take off his clothes before retrieving Lauren is worse than any Baywatch remark. He was more concerned with being wet than he was with seeing if she was alive or could be rescued.)

Actually I wrote that and I'm flattered you think Loretta wrote it!!! OMG, I wish I could write as well as she does.

But you're right. No parent (or even a stranger witnessing a child fall from a 120ft cliff) would have stayed on that cell phone that long without handing it off and going down to see if the child was still alive.

Of course, my own personal theory is that he knew she was dead before he even went to the nude beach. We'll see if the evidence goes there. I'm waiting on more testimony on my hunch.

In Sarah's cross, Geragos tried to get her to say she had been to IP with Cameron before (remember the cliff visit where he said 'children had died'?) so if that IS the case, then Cameron was very familiar with IP and its dangers, to say the least. I'm not convinced that is where they actually were. I'll have to check the transcripts again to see what Geragos was saying.

Ronni said...

Dane, I don't know if there is proof (we have to wait and see what is presented by Hum), but my belief is that Cameron actually went down to Lauren's body before going back up and over IP to the nude beach to use the cell phone. To make certain she was dead.

CountryGirl said...

Barbara, it would be Redondo Beach...but according to Geragos (once again testifying for Cameron via his cross), Cameron took Sarah to IP when they were dating.

If that is true, he is one sick, twisted POS and Lauren's death there is even more pointedly to hurt Sarah, if that is possible.

CountryGirl said...

Think about it. He took Lauren to the exact spot to kill her that he took Sarah and told her about children's deaths...and it upset Sarah when they were there together.

This is far more premeditated than even Hum is stating IF this is true. According to her statement to detectives in 12/2000--which we don't know--but Geragos had her read it to refresh her recollection--it might be true.

CountryGirl said...

Geragos might have just stepped in it big time with his question there. The jury will have to put 2 and 2 together.

But didn't Ted deny that Cameron was familiar with IP and therefore didn't know the dangers?

Anonymous said...

That really doesn't make sense from a defense perspective, CG. I can't imagine it will help to make him look less guilty. Knowing about the nude beach and knowing the danger of the area and he still takes his four year old daughter there? Exactly which side is Mark representing?

CountryGirl said...

It really doesn't and I couldn't believe my eyes when I read it. What was he thinking?

Maybe someone else can shed some light on this because it beats the heck out of me.

Anonymous said...

That's the only possible reason that he could be stressing that point but it seems to me that it's backfiring. I can't possibly know how this is playing to the jury but to me it makes him seem more guilty, not less. He was very familiar with the place, he knew there were few people or knew when it would be desserted. I think this defense attorney isn't worth a tenth of his fee.

Anonymous said...

It's almost as if the defense attorney is stressing the fact that his client "cased the joint" before committing the crime.

Maybe he takes on these scum bag guilty clients so he can ensure that they go to jail.

CountryGirl said...

He can't then go back and argue to the jury that he wasn't aware of the dangers when he pointed out to Sarah--the one with NO FENCES.

Ronni said...

The problem with Geragos is that he doesn't seem to have any more empathy than his clients. I remember hearing this a lot during Peterson.

I know his job is to make his client look innocent, but he appears to have a very shaky idea of what actually accomplishes that. The jury can't possibly enjoy seeing him tear great chunks off of Sarah, for instance. If I were him, I'd have minimized cross of her, instead of trying to trap her into telling a different story than she did 8 years ago.

CountryGirl said...

Yeah, what is he trying to do? Give the jury a motive for the murder? That's Hum's job.

Ronni said...

I think he was trying to get her to lose her temper, thus looking as if she might not be a good mother.

I was seeing, "If you knew this place was dangerous, why didn't you get a court order preventing Cam from taking Lauren there, as well as his boat?" Playing to any guilt she might be feeling. He has to know the guilty feeling is there--I'm sure she has hit herself over and over with "why didn't I go and get her from the daycare?"

If he yammered at me like that, I'd probably lose my temper, or, at least, my emotional center.

I think Sarah did very well.

Anonymous said...

I just think that he could have used another hot button other than the one that highlights the blueprint plans by Cam for "how to kill your child and make it look like an accident".

Jeff Leslie is on the stand. Ted and Patty are probably putting together the cross for Geragos.

loretta said...

LOL, cg.

I think the motive is really starting to take shape (even though it's not required for conviction) and the premeditation is very clear.

Motive - financial freedom due to stressors of under or unemployment; stress from new wife about having around a child you did not want in the first place, and SPITE and VINDICTIVENESS toward woman whose 'fault' it was in the first place. He's not a complex man, he's a troglodyte. Don't ascribe anything too esoteric to him.

The premeditation: his footwear, borrowing his dad's car, taking her to IP, visiting IP prior, arranging for Patty not to be there (unusual) and not taking the cell phone.

It's clear he planned it.

Ronni said...

I agree.

CountryGirl said...

KFI news just played 2 clips from the 911 tape and you could hear Cameron talking to the nude beach goers and he sounded like he was laughing. Sick!

CountryGirl said...

My, my, my! Look what I found posted today on the Southern California Law Blog:

I was a potential juror on this trial and I sat for days listening and watching that bastard Cameron Brown sit there - he is guilty as hell. He was damn lucky to have had such a classy lady such as Laurens mother to even be with - his white trash wife and family are pathetic and if he wants to have any chance at winning his case just by mere “reasonable doubt” which in my mind there is none, perhaps he ought to keep his “wife” out of the court room - Cameron Brown is a child killer an deserves to spend the rest of his life in jail with general population. So they can give him all that he desevres in pain and suffering. I had the opportunity to meet Laurens sweet and gentle mother - how dare Cameron take such a beautiful childs life away. The $1000 child support is far less than what Mark Gerrigos is charging I’m sure. The new Mrs. Brown must have sold all her clothes, car and everything to retain Mark Gerrigos, like who would want an attorney that his last client is sitting on Death Row. I actually think Mark Gerrigos is probably a good attorney and I found him rather fascinating and maybe just has chance of a hung jury would put him back on top … or maybe the publicity is what he is looking for. Cameron is pathetic and I wish the DA would have pushed for the detah penalty. Whoever this brotherinlaw is that is responding is as pathetic as Cameron, I know coworkers of Cam and they all agree he is a loser and selfish - how can he even look at himself in the mirror - I hope every guy in jail has gotten a piece of his ass. This trial has distrurbed me very much - who takes off their clothes before trying to rescue a child they love, why didn’t the bastard at least call Laurens mother to tell her about the accident. I pray he rots in hell. No matter what he IS responsbible for her death becuase he did not protect his baby girl from a dangerous situation. She cried before she went with him - she hated him he was mean to her. That website about FreeCambrown … or whatever it is - is a bunch of photos of only happy times. My daughter went with her father willingly once a week for 15 years and never carried on like that. Thuis webiste has me fired upa nd I wish Icoudl sit in on the trial every day - but unfortunately I have to work - GO TO HELL ALL YOU CAMERON BROWN SUPPORTERS - you have got to be kidding - I suppose you all think OJ was innocent too !

This is the most disturbing of cases!

At worst, Geragos is an insensitive, arrogant, slimy, ugly POS.

At best he is a victim's advocate.

He has absolutely no idea what works with juries. The man is distasteful on all fronts! We should thank the Good Lord that the worst of the worst choose to be represented by the slug.

JMHO, of course

Great writing from both ladies on this case.

There aren't any significant cliffs in Redondo, guys. Used to bike there all the time when I lived in OldFart Beach (Newport Beach). It's basically flat from RPV to Malibu, with a few small bluffs around the airport in Santa Monica.

This is exactly why i suggest to any mother who may have reason to suspect an ex would harm their child to forgo the freakin' child support!! Buy school clothes at the goodwill & let the guy relinquish his rights without paying child support. I'd rather live poor with my child than visit them at a cemetary while banking on a joke of a half assed legal system to even the score with a killer Dad. Forget the money Moms!! It aint worth it.

Should you all find a life? While I am interested in the case, I find this site quite annoying. Give the man his due, and let the judge and jury decide. This is a very biased site and one that should be avoided. Go read a book or do something productive with your life. Did you fail at law school and this is the life you have now?
